Υπάρχει/ Υπάρχουν There is/There are and the adjective πολλοί – πολλές – πολλά

Today we’re talking about the verb »υπάρχει» – »υπάρχουν» .

‘Υπάρχει’ means »there is..» and it’s used only for one thing and usually in combination with the indefinite article in nominative (ένας, μία, ένα).

For example: Υπάρχει ένα παράθυρο στο δωμάτιο. (There is a window in the room).

‘Υπάρχουν’ means »there are..» and it’s used for more than one things and it can be combined with the numbers from two and on.. and the adjective »πολλοί (m), πολλές (f), πολλά (n)» , which means »many». This adjective is used before nouns in plural number. But be careful of the gender. If the noun is male we have to use the type »πολλοί» and the same for the other genders. And of course it is declined in cases.

Let’s see some some examples:

Υπάρχουν δέντρα στο πάρκο. ( There are trees in the park.) or Υπάρχουν πολλά δέντρα στο πάρκο. ( There are many trees in the park.)

Υπάρχουν καρέκλες στο σαλόνι. ( There are chairs in the living room.) or Υπάρχουν πέντε καρέκλες στο σαλόνι. ( There are 5 chairs in the living room.)
